Layoffs at Tesla and Rivian

Tesla and Rivian are both cutting US jobs. At Rivian in particular, this is a significant number, while Tesla is closing one specific office.

Tesla will lose 229 jobs due to the closure of a branch in San Mateo, California. This in itself is not news, but in this case it fits in with a trend. Tesla has previously announced that it wants to cut jobs in order to cut costs, or at least reduce the number of permanent contracts. CEO Elon Musk fears a recession and would rather avoid it.

At Rivian it concerns an unknown number of employees, but probably a substantial number. Carscoops reports that the layoffs probably affect about five percent of the total workforce, which would come down to 700 people. Rivian would also cite the economic circumstances as a reason. This brand is still in the start-up phase and that obviously costs money. According to a leaked letter, the reduction is necessary to continue growing ‘in a responsible way’.
