Learn English with Duolingo on Android device

Learn English for free with the Duolingo app.


With the app Duolingo you learn English (or another language) in a playful way. Practice for a few minutes every day and in time you will speak a decent amount of English. The courses are playful. You can easily learn new words through pictures. Pronunciation is practiced by repeating sentences and vocabulary expanded by translating sentences into the language you want to learn. After completing a level, you move on to a higher level. Duolingo also offers a test with which you can prove that you have mastered the material from the previous lessons.

The English course is available from Dutch. Start this course as follows:

  • Tap the app Duolingo to open it.
  • Tap on Start immediately.
  • Under ‘I want to learn’, tap English.
  • Duolingo may ask a few questions, such as how you discovered Duolingo and why you are learning this language. For example, click Different > To travel.
  • Choose the number of minutes you want to spend studying per day. There are four choices: Relaxed (5 minutes), Default (10 minutes), Serious and Intensive (20 minutes).
  • Tap on Further.
  • Choose a path by tapping Are you learning English for the first time or Do you already speak some English? In the second case, tap Start test and follows a short test. Did you choose the first option? The first lesson starts right away.
  • The first assignment is a series of pictures, where you have to tap the correct translation. Do that, and a voice will pronounce the chosen word.
  • Tap on Check to see if the answer is correct.
  • The app will let you know if the answer was correct via a sound signal and a notification on the screen. Continue the rest of the course by clicking Further to tap.
  • After the first lesson you can create a profile so that your progress is saved. Tap on Create profile.
  • Log in with your Facebook or Google account or create a profile by entering an email address and password. We do the latter.
  • Enter your age and tap Further.
  • Type your name and tap Further.
  • enter your email and tap Further.
  • Choose a password.
  • Tap on Create profile.
  • click on no thanks when you are asked to use Duolingo Plus for free for a week.
  • Tap on Back to start.

You can now continue with the course.

You can also immerse yourself in another foreign language. Duolingo offers courses in French, German, Swedish, Turkish, Spanish or Italian. You can also learn less popular languages ​​such as Hungarian, Esperanto, Ukrainian and Norwegian via the app. Duolingo regularly offers new languages. You follow a few courses in Dutch: French and German. But most courses are only in English for now. It is therefore not possible to follow an Italian course in Dutch, but it is possible to follow an Italian course. Do this like this:

  • Tap the flag icon in the top left.
  • Tap on Class.
  • Optionally tap More.
  • Tap the desired course under the option ‘For English Speakers’. For example, tap Italian for an Italian course.
  • Tap on Okay.
  • Tap on Learning Italian for the first time?
  • The first lesson begins. Tap the correct answer and then check.
  • Tap on Continue to go to the next question.
