Listening to music together with group sessions in Spotify

Listening to music is fun anyway, but listening to music with your friends is a lot of fun. Spotify has built a nice feature for that: group sessions. Officially, the feature is still under development, but it works fine, and you can use it as usual. This is how group sessions work in Spotify.

Start a group session

To start a group session, you must first play music – on your smartphone, as the desktop version of Spotify does not yet support the function. It can be a playlist you created yourself, or you can use an existing playlist, it’s just the first songs.

As soon as you play music, press the icon that you normally use to cast music to your wireless speaker, the speaker in front of the half screen. At the bottom of the window that opens, you will see Start a group session with a beta icon behind it to indicate that the feature is still in development. Press the green button Start session and the party can begin – literally.

Invite friends

After you have started a Spotify group session, you will arrive at the next screen, where you will only see your username so far. Tap on Invite friends to see the list of options. You can share a link, send a WhatsApp message or use another app via the three-dot menu. You can also go there Close to tap: your phone will then search for nearby smartphones to connect to, although you still have to turn it on.

Participants can now play their own music. This is quite rigorous: everyone who clicks on a number immediately gets priority, so agree well who does what. They can also choose whether they want to listen to music on their own device or use the device you are currently listening to, useful if you are physically in the same room. Also remember that everyone needs to be on a smartphone, PCs and laptops are not supported yet.

End group session

Is your neighbor tired and working his way into your session, or do you want someone off the list for some other reason? Removing individual participants is not possible without immediately blocking them completely, which may be a bit too much of a good thing. You can of course always start a new session and invite the participants you want to join again.

When the party is over, or the work day is over, you can go back one window by tapping the arrow at the top right and at the bottom End session. Don’t worry: your music continues to play, only the other party guests can no longer operate the playlist.
