Google, Apple and Microsoft will introduce an important alternative to passwords in 2023. Instead, you use a phone as a key to log in, which is more secure than a password thanks to the FIDO industry standard.
Login without password
Choosing a strong password is necessary, but it can sometimes be a chore to manage all your passwords, especially if you don’t use a password manager. Microsoft, Apple and Google are joining forces to enable a passwordless internet experience from 2023, that announce the companies†
Instead of the password, your phone will become the key to your accounts. You take your phone with you to confirm that it is you with a PIN code, the fingerprint scanner or pattern. You can exchange a cryptographic token with an app, website or other digital service. It all works with an industry standard called ‘FIDO’.
“For example, it will be possible to sign in to the Chrome browser that runs on Microsoft Windows using your Apple device,” Microsoft vice president of security Vasu Jakkal said in a statement. The Verge† Even if you log in to a website for the very first time, a password is no longer necessary.
Hackers and Phishing
It will save many internet users a lot of headaches, but the function does not only provide more ease of use: it should also make logging in more secure. Hackers already have to physically get hold of a device to log in and, on the other hand, phishing no longer stands a chance. You know the well-known method of deception: guiding users to a fake website where they can log in, only to get away with their password and data.
Of course there is also a solution if your phone is stolen or if you have lost it. In that case, malicious parties will still not be able to steal your accounts, because they need your PIN, pattern or fingerprint to log in. On the other hand, you can transfer the key from an old phone to a new device via Google Cloud, clarifies Google.
The three tech companies have not yet announced when logging in without a password with the FIDO standard will be available. We do know that it will be sometime in 2023. What do you think of the system? Are you happy that passwords are giving way to the FIDO standard? Let us know in the comments.
