A diesel is out of favor, because it is labeled as not so friendly to the environment. Yet the mile-eater is still well served with such a fine engine, which has been used for a long time. Demand for such cars is small, so used prices are attractive. So for such a cheap diesel it is best to say something. What can be found for €5,000? Remarkably many compact diesels that went on the road about ten years ago.

Chevrolet Aveo 1.3D
€4.650
2012
144,650 km
Although there is a Chevrolet logo on the front, under the skin this is a rock-solid and reliable Daewoo. We are dealing here with an ordinary example of rebadging, arising from the takeover of the Korean brand by General Motors. This is good news for the buyer, because Daewoo knows how to put together a good car for a nice price. Look at this black Aveo. It looks neat, the maintenance booklets are stamped and the Ecotec diesel has just been run in with about 140,000 kilometers on the clock. To top it off, it is also wonderfully on the retina with its special design. The front in particular looks nice and cool thanks to the headlights that look angry at the world. With a theoretical consumption of 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers, this is wonderfully economical dieseling.
veteran
Fiat Punto M-Jet
€3.950
2011
135,637 km
You should not change something that is good, the clever minds at Fiat will have thought. This applies, for example, to the last generation Punto, which can rightly be called a veteran because of its respectable production period. When we look at the photos of this red specimen, we understand that; even now the design still looks fresh and fruity. This three-door Punto dates from the time when a ‘clean’ diesel was rewarded with exemption from road tax because of its low carbon dioxide emissions. Those days are unfortunately behind us, but with a modest asking price of just under €4,000 and an attractive mileage, this is still wonderfully cheap to drive, provided you drive enough miles. The copy that we have found is the Actual version and it is quite basic. With its sleek appearance in combination with the right color, we think this is a sturdy car.
Known block
Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI
€4.988
2011
131,913 km
Just like the Aveo, this candidate from Germany is equipped with the famous Ecotec block. Until recently, Opel was also part of GM. That means that this Corsa is not too thirsty either. Driving is relatively affordable, provided you drive at least 15,000 kilometers on an annual basis. Beautiful white is not ugly and the little Opel can have that color just fine in our opinion. In combination with the tinted rear windows and neat wheels, this is just a cool cart. The photos show a well-maintained car that looks neat inside and out. Judging by the low mileage, you can use this for years to come. The asking price is exactly within our chosen limit of €5,000 and for that amount you will not easily find a comparable Corsa with a petrol block in the front that is just as sleek.
