Lorinser misses open Mercedes-Benz G-class

The current G-class may resemble its predecessors introduced in the 1970s in every respect, but there is one area where the ‘G’ differs greatly from its forefathers. There is no such thing as an open G-class. The German tuner Lorinser is disappointed by this and shows with a modernized open primal G-class how a refurbished G-class Cabrio in 2021 comes to the fore.

In 2013, Mercedes-Benz said goodbye to the G-class Cabriolet with a Final Edition, the open three-door variant of the G-class that in its final phase of life was only available with a 388 hp and 530 Nm strong 5.5 V8. Numerous versions of the G-class presented in 2018 already exist, but there is only one body variant: the five-door.

Tuner Lorinser is not only concerned with tuning cars, but also with restorations and restomods and comes with a modernized version of the latest G-class Cabriolet. The company is stocking the car with parts that are available on special request. We see a G-class Cabriolet with a special honeycomb grille, a sportier-looking grille that should emphasize that behind it is a large V8. That eight-cylinder also sounds a bit more impressive, according to Lorinser, thanks to a forgiving muffler. We see modified bumper work all around and on the back we see – just like in the grille – of course the well-known Lorinser logo. The black one in the photos has a brown convertible top and stands on – yes – black, 22-inch alloy wheels. Not a fan of those black slippers? Don’t worry, Lorinser also supplies these wheels in silver.

With this G Cabriolet, Lorinser of course just shows what equipment it has for the old G-class. Smart marketing, but it is immediately a nice memory of the G-class Cabriolet of yesteryear, a body style that we probably will not see from the now three years young ‘G’. Incidentally, Mercedes-Maybach of the previous G-class also had a crazy Landaulet in the order books. There will be a jolly 4×4² version of the current model, which proves that the gentlemen and ladies in Stuttgart have lost little of their playfulness.
