Autonomous level 4
The Lotus Eletre is already not what you expect from Lotus on many fronts, but there is more to come. Lotus is working behind the scenes on autonomous driving level 4 for the Eletre. That makes the car completely self-driving.
Lotus is pre-eminently a brand that values driving pleasure. Nevertheless, in the future you may no longer have to steer yourself in a Lotus. The Lotus Eletre, which is already knocking down many sacred Lotus houses, is completely packed with Lidar sensors and cameras to enable autonomous driving. According to the top engineer involved, this offers a lot of possibilities and there is no lack of ambition.
Li Bo, the CEO of Lotus Robotics, talks to Coach that the Eletre has the hardware on board to eventually become self-driving with only one driver intervention per 100,000 km. In practice, this means that you can let the Eletre do its own thing and hand over the steering wheel. Just enter an address and off you go. According to Li, there is still a way to go, because the Eletre is now at one intervention per 200 km, so you still have to keep your head up.
It is not yet clear how long Lotus thinks it will take to get this far with the Eletre. Li does say that it will be an extra challenge to get the Eletre ready for European roads, because we don’t have a keep your laneprinciple on the highway. Of course, the legislation must also be ready for it. That is not yet the case here.
