The House of Representatives decides

The discount on fuel excise duties will remain in force throughout 2024, the House of Representatives has decided. The cabinet actually did not want it, but the House has the final say.
About a month ago it seemed like the decision was made: the excise tax increase that the cabinet had in mind for 2024 will not go ahead as far as the House of Representatives is concerned. A majority of the House of Representatives then spoke out against the planned increase. The cabinet subsequently announced that it was not happy with this and that it also had difficulty with the way in which this measure is financed. A selection is made from the National Growth Fund, which is intended to help innovative companies.
In a debate in the House of Representatives that lasted until the early hours last night, a whole package of measures was voted in favor. This also included maintaining the current fuel excise tax. Once again, a parliamentary majority was in favor and the planned excise duty increase is therefore definitively cancelled. That will soon save tens of euros on a full tank, but it will provide a grab of €1.2 billion from the National Growth Fund.
