Mahindra and Jeep have had quite a bit of tug-of-war because of the Mahindra Roxor, an off-roader that is very reminiscent of the original Jeep. It seems that Mahindra has again added some water to the wine.
The Indian Mahindra has been building a Jeep lookalike for years: the Thar. It offers it under the name Roxor in the country where the real Jeep originated, the United States. That is not comfortable for Jeep and that is why the two companies have already faced each other several times with their lawyers. The Roxor really looked like two drops of water on the Jeep CJ three years ago, so the then Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler went on the attack. Mahindra responded in 2020 by giving the Roxor a slightly different grille and was given the green light to sell the Roxor in the US at the end of that year.
The Mahindra Roxor with the slightly modified grille as proposed by the company in 2020.
However, it seems that then – or after – an agreement was made with Mahindra that the Roxor needed some further adjustment before Jeep would actually bury the hatchet. Mahindra now casually presents another modified Roxor that looks even less like the Jeep. This is finally the Roxor that goes on sale in the US. Mahindra has again adjusted the grille and the frame of the headlights, but it doesn’t stop there. The front screens are a lot more modest in size and, moreover, no longer curl down at the front, as is the case with the Jeep. All in all, this makes the Roxor look a lot bareer than before, but more importantly, it no longer looks like a 1 on 1 copy of the Jeep CJ. However, there are still major similarities.
Despite the exterior changes, the Mahindra Roxor still has the 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel under the hood, which delivers a modest 64 hp and 195 Nm of torque. The Roxor is limited to 89 km/h and is also not allowed on public roads in the United States. It may therefore only be used in a closed area. The Americans can order a Roxor from converted €16,500. That Mahindra is also not averse to Jeep copies on the home market in India, it proved last year with the new Thar.
