There are a lot of new features coming to your iPhone’s Mail app with iOS 18. These changes have already been announced!
New Features for Mail in iOS 18
Apple is making major changes to the iPhone with iOS 18. The update overhauls several Apple apps, including the Mail app. The application gets a completely new design and is expanded with Apple Intelligence. This is the first time in years that Apple has adjusted the Mail app. Do you use the app regularly and want to know what is going to change? These features are coming to the Mail app in iOS 18!
1. Categories
Do you often lose track of your mailbox? Then there is good news, because from iOS 18 the Mail app automatically sorts all your messages into the right category. For example, there is an inbox with all your transactions, with updates, promotions and much more. This makes it much easier to find all your mails. In the inbox with all mails, your messages are sorted chronologically, as was already the case in iOS 17.
2. Digest View
In iOS 18, the Mail app collects all messages from a sender in the same place. So you see all emails from, for example, the supermarket in your neighborhood in one place (Digest View), so you can find important emails faster. This sorting only works within a category, so in the overview with all emails there is no division per sender. Is a company not assigned to the correct category by the Mail app? Then you can easily adjust the classification yourself.
3. Highlight unread emails
The layout of the Mail app is getting a major overhaul in iOS 18, but that’s not all. In the new version of the app, Apple is making a clearer distinction between read and unread emails. Messages you’ve already opened are placed lower in the overview, while unread emails appear at the top. This layout reduces the chance of you missing an email.
4. Smart answers
Apple Intelligence makes replying to emails much easier in iOS 18. Artificial intelligence is used to compose smart replies. All you have to do is answer a few questions in the Mail app, and a response is automatically written. You can also provide additional information to Apple Intelligence, so that the email is as complete as possible.
5. Writing Tools
In iOS 18 you get a writing aid called Writing Tools in the Mail app. With the writing assistant it is possible to improve, rewrite, check and summarize self-written texts. That is not all, because you can also adjust the tone of the text to friendly or professional. Do you find the email too long? Or does your message need to be shortened? Apple Intelligence can also help with that help you with.
6. Summarize
Starting with iOS 18, you no longer need to read all your emails, because Apple Intelligence summarizes all messages for you. The short summary is displayed in the preview of the email, so you no longer have to open the message. If you do open the email, you will see a more extensive summary. It is still advisable to read important emails yourself, so that you are sure not to miss any information.
7. Priority emails
To help you avoid missing important emails, Apple is prioritizing messages at the top of the Mail app feed in iOS 18. Emails are prioritized when information is shared that’s time-sensitive, such as an event invite, flight check-in, or a canceled meeting. Emails with this information will appear first in iOS 18.
Many features won’t come until iOS 18.1 (or later)
So, iOS 18 brings a lot of new features to the Mail app, but unfortunately not all of them are available right away. For a large part of the features, we have to wait for a later update. In addition, Apple Intelligence is not yet available for European users, which means we have to wait until 2025 for all features to appear in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The revamped Mail app is therefore not yet available in the test versions of iOS 18. Apple also did not change the design of the app in the beta of iOS 18 and iOS 18.1. So it seems certain that the features will still be a while away. Want to know which changes will be available immediately with the release of iOS 18?
