Major update for Spotify on desktop: download music and 2 more improvements

Spotify is rolling out an update for the desktop and browser version. From now on you can download music via your computer for offline listening and making playlists is a lot easier.

Major Spotify update for desktop

The update will roll out in phases immediately. It can therefore take a few days before you receive the new version. The update is only available for the computer versions of Spotify (for both macOS if Windows). The iPhone version of Spotify has not been updated.

1. Fresh design

The first thing you notice is the new design. The desktop version of Spotify has been given a fresh design that is more in line with the iPhone version of the music service. The home screen emphasizes your favorite albums, playlists, and podcasts.

Also discovery plays a central role. Spotify actively tries to recommend music that you may find interesting via the home screen. From now on you will also find recommendations for podcasts on your home screen.

2. Download music

Furthermore, it is now possible to download music. This is very handy, because you can also listen to your favorite albums, playlists, podcasts and singles offline. The smartphone versions of Spotify have been able to download music for some time.

You download songs by pressing the down arrow button. You can also download entire albums and playlists at once.

3. Better Playlists

Also great: creating playlists is now a lot more convenient. For example, while selecting music, you can search for songs and albums via the search bar and add them directly.

It is also possible to provide your own playlists with a description and pictures. Come across a cool song? Then you can just drag it to your playlist to add it.

“Computer version lagged”

Spotify has rolled out the substantial desktop update because, in its own words, this version lagged behind the mobile versions. “We felt that the desktop version of Spotify did not offer the same experience,” the company said in the press release.

Spotify recently released a HiFi subscription. Allows you to listen to music with lossless audio. This means that no compression has been applied to keep the audio files small. This makes Spotify HiFi sound better than the normal subscription.
