Majority of Dutch cars older than ten years

With 2022 behind us, the RDW takes stock. A striking fact is that most cars in the Netherlands are now older than ten years. It is also striking that there are large regional differences when it comes to electric driving.

The Netherlands has had a relatively old fleet for years. The times when a car was almost gone after ten years are long gone. The National Road Transport Agency (RDW) has new figures and on the basis of this concludes that even more than half of the 11 million passenger cars and commercial vehicles in the Netherlands are more than ten years old. This means that the Netherlands has one of the oldest fleets in Europe. Not surprisingly, the majority of these older cars are equipped with a fuel engine. There are still 2,976 electric passenger cars and 403 electric commercial vehicles that are older than ten years.

The number of petrol cars in the Netherlands currently exceeds 7.8 million. Although diesels have become less popular in recent years, almost 2 million are still driving around in our country. The Netherlands now has a total of 343,677 electric passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The RDW also announced that Flevoland has the most fully electrically powered cars, with a share of 11.5 percent. In Flevoland, 20.9 percent of passenger cars less than five years old are electric. According to the RDW, Limburg is well behind with 7.3 percent.
