A majority in Parliament wants to reverse the proposed increase in excise duties on petrol and diesel, which would take effect on January 1. A liter of gasoline would then become 21 cents more expensive. A parliamentary majority is now putting a stop to this, according to a tour by RTL News. “My commitment is very clear: I want us to combat this cost increase,” says VVD faction leader Sophie Hermans.
Fuel prices already rose sharply last July, because part of the excise tax discount that the government had introduced after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine was scrapped. From January 2024, the remainder of the excise duty discount would expire. An inflation correction would be added on top of this, making a liter of petrol 21 cents more expensive in total.
A parliamentary majority of VVD, PVV, SP, BBB, FvD, DENK, Fractie Den Haan, BVNL and JA21 now wants the excise tax increase off the table. They will argue for this during the General Political Considerations – next Wednesday and Thursday – according to RTL News.
