A fixed travel allowance per month will be a thing of the past for many workers in the coming year, expects the AWVN employers’ association. Instead, more attention is paid to specific travel times. Of course, the corona crisis also plays a role in this.
At present, it is still customary for many companies to pay out a fixed travel allowance per month to employees. As of 2021, however, such compensation can no longer be paid out tax-free. A reimbursement based on actual travel expenses (so more customization) is still possible. AWVN talks to BNR News Radio that for many employers this means that there is a line through the fixed travel allowance. The corona crisis also plays a role in this, because at the moment a lot is being paid ‘unnecessarily’ due to the many working from home.
It is not completely unnecessary, because you also incur costs with working from home. Think of extra water, electricity and gas consumption. In a sense, the fixed travel allowance could now be used for that. AWVN, through Jannes van der Velde, states that a solution will undoubtedly be found here when the fixed travel allowance is canceled: “We do not think it is unreasonable that costs are reimbursed as people incur when working from home. Many companies already do this. We anticipate that this will be discussed in all reasonableness. ” AWVN is not concerned about a scenario in which employers are happy with the scrapping of the travel allowance and then no ‘home work allowance’ in return: “We have no indication that employers will be so unreasonable.”
