McLaren MCL60: anniversary car in familiar colours

McLaren’s Formula 1 team joins the fast-growing list of F1 teams that have presented the car (or livery) of the new season. McLaren’s new F1 car has a special name, but otherwise looks quite familiar.

This year it is exactly 60 years ago that Bruce McLaren founded his own racing team and McLaren is of course reflecting on that. The new Formula 1 car for the 2023 season should logically be called MCL37, but is called MCL60. The number 60 is also on the flank and on the very tip of the nose. Otherwise, the MCL60 looks familiar. That is to say: Papaya ORange is again the base colour, in itself a tribute to the start of McLaren Racing. The orange is again accompanied by blue and black, although the layout is slightly different than last year.

McLaren immediately shows the real thing, so not simply last year’s car with this year’s livery. It is striking that McLaren is broadly going for similar sidepods as Red Bull last year and you can bet that we will see that with more teams. The basic shape of the MCL60 seems a bit wider towards the back. It is hoped for the team that it also leads to better performance overall, because last year McLaren had a harder time than they had hoped and the team finished fifth in the championship. This year it will again compete with Lando Norris, but next to him is now F1 debutant Oscar Piastri. He replaces his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo.
