MegaBoom 4 review: the bluetooth speaker that floats

The MegaBoom 4 is a Bluetooth speaker that you can easily take with you for a day of chilling by the water. But does it sound good? You can read that in our MegaBoom 4 review.

Pros

  • Dust and waterproof (IP67)

  • Good sound

  • Special button for playlist

Negatives

  • Sound can distort when turned up (very) loud

  • Just a bit too big to take with you easily

MegaBoom 4 review

The MegaBoom 4 (199.99 euros) is a Bluetooth speaker with an IP67 rating. This means that it is waterproof and dustproof. For example, you can use it in the shower and it can also take a short dip in the pool (the speaker even floats). Perfect for a day at the beach, or a pool party behind the house. Submerging is also no problem, but up to 1 meter deep and for a maximum of 30 minutes.

The sound of the MegaBoom 4 is good. It has a nice bass sound (after some tinkering with the equalizer) and quite some power. If you turn the speaker up very loud, then it all sounds a bit less nice and some distortion can occur.

MegaBoom 4 review: the bluetooth speaker that floats

The speaker has a range of about 45 meters, but this depends on the number of obstacles in the way. We have used the speaker for a few days in and around the house, and never had the sound break up.

You can connect the speaker to your iPhone in the normal way via Bluetooth and play music. But with the app you get more options. It is also possible to link multiple speakers of this kind to each other. You can even expand this to 150(!) pieces. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to test this …

The app then allows you to turn the speaker on or off remotely and adjust the sound using the equalizer. A notable feature we came across during this review of the MegaBoom 4 is the megaphone. This allows you to speak into the microphone of your iPhone (if you are using it to stream music) and announce something through the speaker.

On top of the speaker you will find a large button, this is the ‘Magic Button’. Here you can attach your own playlist, but you have to use the app for that. At the moment this is only possible with Apple Music and Amazon Music, but it says that new services will be added in the future.

By the way, you don’t have to choose one playlist. These can also be different playlists, albums or songs. Once you have set that up, you can always start the music immediately by holding the Magic Button for two seconds (but you have to make sure the app is open on your iPhone). By quickly pressing the button twice during playback, you can skip a song.

Also nice: you can use the speaker as an alarm clock. With the app you can set an alarm. You use a song from the linked streaming services on your iPhone. The app is otherwise very clear, but there could be a few more music services for the Magic Button.

MegaBoom 4 review: conclusion

The MegaBoom 4 is a neat speaker. With the standard settings the low tones lack a bit of power, but with the built-in equalizer that can be solved easily. Keep in mind that this speaker can distort a bit at (very) high volumes. That does not take away from the fact that the MegaBoom 4 sounds nice and does its thing perfectly during an evening of chilling with your friends, or a party in the backyard.

The large volume buttons are very easy to use and the special ‘Magic Button’ is a great addition. It is also nice that you can turn on the speaker remotely. This option can be found in the app.

With a maximum Bluetooth distance of 45 meters, you don’t have to worry about the music stopping if you walk too far away and with the battery life of 20 hours (charging via USB-C) you can also get through the evenings and weekends.
