Mercedes-AMG One fastest street-legal car at Nürburgring

It took some work to get it ready, but it was worth it: the Mercedes-AMG One is officially the fastest road-legal production car ever on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

For car manufacturers with blood-fast crack monsters in their offer, there is little as prestigious as taking the lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Porsche had held the record for street-legal cars for quite some time, but now Mercedes-AMG is taking it on. The special over 1,000 hp strong Mercedes-AMG One drove over the famous circuit in the German Eifel in 6:35.183.

Driver Maro Engel steered the hybrid hypercar with Formula 1 powertrain through the ‘Green Hell’ on October 28 in record time. That it was not a ‘one lap miracle’ is apparent from the fact that Engel also set a record time earlier that day with the Mercedes-AMG One. The German wasn’t completely satisfied with that lap and went for one last try just before the circuit closed. That resulted in the even faster time, which has now gone into the books. The time of 6:35.183 applies to the 20.832 km long circuit. On the shorter track variant used for the so-called Super Test for sports cars, the time is 6:30.705.

As mentioned, the previous record was held by Porsche. That went around the track in June 2021 with a Porsche 911 GT2 RS of the previous generation at 6:40.30. The Mercedes-AMG One has shaved off more than 5 seconds. Incidentally, Porsche still holds the record for fastest electric production car. Last summer, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S went around the track in 7:33. The fastest lap for a non street legal car is also in the name of Porsche. In 2018, Timo Bernhard sent a modified Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO across the Ring in just 5:19.546.
