Mercedes-Benz tests new electric SUV

Mercedes-Benz has been tested with a new SUV that raises some questions. It is clear that we are dealing with a fully electric EQ model. Everything around it is still shrouded in mystery.

Mercedes-Benz classifies its electric models under its EQ label. At the moment you can only knock on the EQ level for the EQC, but that will change. That current GLC-based SUV will be joined by a huge number of EQ brothers. In fact, the brand wants to offer an EQ variant for practically all of its models. The EQA will be a fully electric version of the GLA, the EQB will be the electric equivalent of the GLB and the EQE and EQS will be the electric variants of the E-Class and the S-Class respectively. Something remarkable can be seen here. The ‘smaller’ electric models are clearly electric versions of existing SUVs, while previous spy images show that Mercedes-Benz does give the EQE and EQS its own body and a different base. The car in these photos is therefore quite difficult to place.

EQC

The packed SUV, the front of which clearly indicates that it is an electric EQ model, could in theory be the successor to the current EQC. That is a bit quick, but it is not entirely unthinkable. As mentioned, the EQC is based on the GLC, an SUV that is already about five years old and which therefore does not fully benefit from Mercedes’ current knowledge and development in the field of electrical engineering. Should this be the new EQC, Mercedes-Benz clearly chooses to give the second EQC its own coach instead of the new GLC. The new GLC can already be seen on an earlier spy image, and that car really does not look exactly like this brand-new test specimen.

EQ ‘GLE’

Another possibility is that Mercedes-Benz is testing an electric ‘GLE’ here. The SUV doesn’t seem to be quite the size of the current GLE, but it doesn’t seem necessary. The EQE, so the electric sedan that Mercedes-Benz is working on, also seems to be a bit smaller than the current generation E-class. In terms of format, it therefore seems to come between the C and E class. It is therefore quite possible that the electric ‘EQ GLE’ nestles between the GLC and GLE in terms of size. Then there is the model name. Should this be an electric ‘GLE’, Mercedes-Benz could in theory call the car EQ GLE. However, the company successively calls the electric versions of the GLA and GLB EQA and EQB respectively. Model name EQE seems to be used for the already mentioned sedan.

It is not yet possible to say with full certainty what Mercedes-Benz is planning. However, there is no doubt that a mountain of EQ models is arriving. The brand has previously mentioned the arrival of an electric G-class: the EQG … Are we still there?
