Messerschmitt KR back with a vengeance

The Messerschmitt KR is back with a vengeance. The German company Messerschmitt-Werke is breathing new life into the small tricycle. The car comes on the market in two different variants and must cost at least € 10,950.

Originally the Messerschmitt KR dates from 1953. After the Second World War, the aircraft manufacturer was no longer allowed to build aircraft, which forced it to switch to the production of small cars. The Cab roller was mainly distinguished by its large plexiglass hood, a style element that evokes associations with a fighter aircraft. However, there were also versions without the hood. The new KR resembles the original with its slender body, protruding front fenders and two round headlights. The copy in the photos is the KR 202 Sport without roof and windscreen, but Messerschmitt-Werke indicates that a roof is also available as an option.

The modern interpretation of the KR comes in two different variants: the petrol KR 202 and the electric KR E-5000. The KR 202 has a 125 cc single cylinder under the hood that delivers 7.3 hp. Unlike the original KR with its two-stroke engine, this is a four-stroke. The KR E-5000 is powered by a 5 kW (6.8 hp) electric motor. A 1.4 kWh battery supplies that power source with power. Both variants have a top speed of 90 km / h. The range of the E5000 is up to 80 kilometers, the battery is fully charged in 4 to 6 hours. The KR 202 will travel an estimated 160 kilometers with its 6-liter fuel tank. Optionally, an extra battery is available for the E-5000 that doubles the range. For that you just have to put € 1,650 on the table.

More than ten grand

Remarkably enough, the KR-E5000 with an empty weight of 195 kilos is 25 kilos lighter than its petrol brother. Incidentally, that weight is also lower than that of the original KR. Both the KR 202 and KR-E5000 have a fiberglass body on a steel and aluminum frame. In addition, they are equipped with disc brakes all round, LED headlights and an adjustable suspension. The KR 202 is available from € 10,950, the KR E-5000 should yield € 12,950. Incidentally, these are prices exclusive of taxes and with a temporary discount of 20 percent. Transport costs of € 690 are added to the Netherlands.
