AI function remains visible in WhatsApp
The AI-Chatbot from Meta is integrated in WhatsApp and remains visible as a button within the app. Although the use of the function is not mandatory, it is not possible to remove or hide this button. This design is in line with other elements in WhatsApp such as status and channels, which have a permanent place in the interface.
Questions about regulations and privacy
The arrival of Meta AI for message apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger raises questions about privacy, user control and the protection of personal data. There is care about the fact that the function is visible as standard and that you cannot switch it off. Member of the European Parliament Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová recently brought this subject to the attention during a meeting of the Commission for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection of the European Parliament. She announced this herself on X (former Twitter) she asked if the European Commission is aware of this AI integration and whether it is in line with European regulations. In addition, she has also submitted a written question to the committee about this.
What does this mean for you?
For users, something visually changes in WhatsApp: a new blue button for Meta AI is added to the overview screen. This button cannot be switched off, but users can choose for themselves whether or not they use the AI ​​functionality. Those who do not need the function can therefore simply ignore it.
Meta AI is therefore an extra tool within the app and available for those who need it, but visible to everyone. Since the beginning of April the position can also be used in the Netherlands, but only on Android and also in English. It is unknown when this function comes to iOS devices.
Submit an objection on Facebook and Instagram
