MG sets up crowdfunding campaign for Cyberster

MG makes a remarkable move with the Cyberster. The car brand has set up a crowdfunding campaign to partly finance the development and production of the sports car. The Cyberster does not go into production until enough money has been raised.

Crowdfunding is not uncommon for smaller start-ups to market new ideas. However, for a car brand like MG, which is part of the Chinese multinational SAIC Motor, this way of financing is to say the least remarkable. Certainly because it concerns an amount that is not very much in the car industry. With the crowdfunding campaign, MG wants to raise 50 million Yuan, converted € 6.4 million, for the production of the Cyberster. In addition, the brand says that every 1,000 Yuan represents one copy, which equates to a total production of 5,000 cars. Donors can choose from a donation of 1,000 or 10,000 Yuan, converted to € 128 or € 1,279.

With the first amount you become a ‘dream partner’ and you get a scale model of the Cyberster. The larger donation is perhaps more interesting, because then MG promises that as a ‘super partner’ you can actually help think about the final shape of the sports car. However, it is quite unclear how this works. It also does not seem that with a donation you immediately have a reservation for the production model. The crowdfunding campaign will run until July 31 and when the intended amount has been reached, MG promises to give the green light for the development of the definitive Cyberster. If the goal is not reached, the participants will get their money back. It is not known whether the production of the Cyberster is definitely off the track in that case. So wait and see …

Cyber star

The MG Cyberster is an electric two-seat roadster with a futuristic design. The intended specifications do not lie, because MG promises a range of 800 kilometers, a maximum power of 449 hp and a sprint time to 100 km / h in ‘less than three seconds’. This could make the Cyberster a good rival for the Tesla Roadster, which is also in the pipeline.
