In the Netherlands you can only buy the MG ZS as a fully electric MG ZS EV. Elsewhere in the world, the MG ZS is also available with conventional petrol engines. There is now a hybrid variant with a completely different front: the MG VS.
In October 2021, MG presented the thoroughly renewed version of the ZS EV to the Dutch consumer. The facelift that MG carried out on the ZS EV not only brought a thoroughly revised front, but also a revised interior and improved electric powertrains to the crossover. The MG ZS is also available with regular petrol engines in various markets. A hybrid variant of the MG ZS did not yet exist, but there is now too.
Meet the MG VS, in fact an MG ZS with a hybrid powertrain. But that’s not the end of the line yet. MG is one of the brands of the Chinese SAIC Motor and that giant also sells cars under the Roewe brand name. In the form of the RX3, the MG ZS has a Roewe brother with a slightly different appearance. That RX3 went under the knife in 2021 and was called RX3 Pro from that moment on (photo 9), but even then we have not yet arrived at what the MG VS actually is. This year Roewe introduced the Lomeno/Totoro, a hybrid version of the Roewe RX3 Pro that, with its different bumpers and new front, is slightly longer than the regular RX3 (photos 10, 11 and 12). Said Roewe Lomeno is now specifically marketed as MG VS by SAIC on the Thai market.
The hybrid MG VS will be placed next to the MG ZS with petrol engines and the electric ZS EV in Thailand. The powertrain consists of a 120 hp 1.5 that works together with a 95 hp electric motor. The system power is 181 hp. The hybrid MG VS looks like two drops of water on its Roewe brother and is also fitted with its interior. That differs from the cockpit that you find in the ZS models. For example, the infotainment screen and the digital instrumentation are optically fused with each other because they are housed in one panel.
The Thai market is of considerable importance to MG. It is therefore not for nothing that the Thai market is endowed with MGs that are not sold elsewhere. For example, SAIC Motor sells the T70 of its Maxus brand in Thailand in a modified form as an MG Extender. In addition, the plug-in hybrid E-HS, also known in the Netherlands, has recently received a facelift (photo 13).
