Minor speeding offenses earn the government an additional 1.2 million euros

Last year, the government collected a total of around 835 million euros in traffic fines, a significant increase compared to a year earlier. The fines for relatively minor speeding violations alone amounted to 1.2 million euros more than in 2022.

In 2023, for the first time, more traffic fines were issued than in the last pre-corona year, 2019. This yields a lot for the government, 835 million euros to be precise. That is almost 110 million euros more than a year earlier. There is a good chance that this amount will be even higher this year, because the fine amounts have been increased again.

The fine that has generated the most revenue for the treasury is the one for driving through a red light: a fine was issued for this almost 230,000 times last year, worth more than 60 million euros in fines. This is evident from the annual overview of the CJIB. Of the 8.5 million traffic fines issued last year, just over 506,000 were for minor speeding violations within built-up areas. This made this, just like in 2022, the most issued fine. More than 16 million euros in fines have been collected from motorists who drove four kilometers per hour too fast within built-up areas. These fines therefore yield 1.2 million euros more than in 2022, although they were issued less often.

Fines for non-hands-free calling have increased significantly. This fine was handed out almost 200,000 times last year and raised more than 58 million euros. It has therefore been deregistered more than 20,000 times more often and yielded more than 11 million euros more than in 2022. This year too, callers at the wheel have enough to fear from agents: they have recently started driving around again. with their ‘peeping bus’. To catch offenders, the police also use smart cameras. Of all the fines issued just once last year, the highest was for a freight forwarder who had overextended his load by more than four meters: that cost him no less than €1,500.
