According to a Korean news website Samsung would be busy to significantly increase the number of smartphones with an Exynos chipset. While about 20% of the brand’s devices now run on its own Exynos processors, this should be at least 50% by 2022.
No more problems
Many will not immediately react enthusiastically when they read that Samsung wants to double the share of Exynos processors in Galaxy phones. In recent years, it has faced a number of problems. The devices, for example from the Galaxy S series, with an Exynos chipset were invariably slower than the same devices with a Qualcomm chip. They were also less economical and some suffered from overheating problems here and there. However, these problems should be partially resolved.
The brand has collaborated with AMD to increase the graphics performance. The upcoming flagships from Samsung would have an Exynos processor with an integrated AMD GPU. AMD would use its RDNA 2 architecture for this. This is often used for PC gaming, but now has to provide the necessary power in an Exynos GPU. According to benchmarks, this should have been successful.
A-line also has to believe it
However, the majority of Samsung devices are in the A-line of the brand. Since this year, these budget and mid-range smartphones often run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon or on a MediaTek Helio chipset. The majority of these devices, on the other hand, should run on an Exynos chip in 2022. The Exynos processors that were used in these devices last year were generally less powerful than those of the competition. It is not yet known whether this has been resolved.
Logical step
Samsung’s plan to provide more devices with its own Exynos chipset is understandable. There is still a worldwide chip shortage and this makes Samsung less independent of Qualcomm or MediaTek. It is hoped that the problems surrounding the Exynos processors will be solved.
