Browsers receive and remember a lot of information about the surfing behavior of internet users. Provide more privacy while browsing the web with Google Chrome.
Saved data
Google Chrome, like other browsers, keeps track of user data. It can’t hurt to think about this and see how you can better protect your privacy.
There are many ways to make sure that Google obtains less data. With many privacy settings, the internet user has to make a trade-off between convenience and privacy. Because not all options in Chrome are built in to inform Google about the user. Many options actually provide an advantage for the internet user, such as staying logged in to a website such as SeniorWeb.nl.
Sign out Google Account
Chrome allows people to sign in with a Google account. This happens, for example, if you log in to Gmail via the browser and then do not log out. The advantage is direct access to Google services, such as Google Drive and Photos. But Google can also register what the account does online. Log out to surf more anonymously:
- Open Google Chrome.
- surf to google.nl
- Click on the circle with initials at the top right.
- click on Log out.
The Google account is disconnected from the browser.
Settings in the browser
Google Chrome has a number of privacy settings that the internet user can adjust themselves. These privacy settings are bundled in the settings menu. We first open this menu section and discuss the options in the following paragraphs.
- Open Chrome.
- Click on the icon with the three dots at the top right.
- click on Institutions.
- Click on the left Privacy and Security.
Content settings
It is also possible to control what information websites can use and what content they show you.
- We assume that the settings are still open under ‘Privacy and security’.
- click on Cookies and Other Site Data. Websites distinguish between different types of cookies. There are useful cookies from the site you are visiting and third party cookies. It depends on you which one you leave on. In general, however, it is easier to surf if useful cookies are left on. Third-party cookies can be disabled. Click on Block third-party cookies. Click on the arrow at the top left to return to the settings.
- click on Site Settings.
- Make sure that under ‘Location’, ‘Camera’ and ‘Microphone’ the option Questions before entry is on.
- Make sure that at ‘Notifications’ the option Questions before sending is on
- Finally click Popups and Redirects. A pop-up is a small window that appears on top of the active browser window while browsing the web. This often advertises or provides more information to the user. In some cases pop-ups are desirable. Decide for yourself whether you find these pop-ups desirable.
Incognito
Users can also browse the web in Chrome without leaving any traces. A number of data is not stored here, without you having to set something separately for this. Browsing history, cookies, site data, and information entered in forms are not saved. Internet without leaving traces can be done via the incognito function.
- Click on the icon with the three dots at the top right.
- click on New Incognito Window.
- A black window opens.
- You can now use the internet as you are used to. Close the private session via the cross at the top right.
