Government compensates damage for minima

The large-scale riots that have taken place in France in recent weeks have burnt down more than 5,600 cars and damaged many more. Now the French government announces that it will compensate the damage incurred for minimum wage earners who at least insured their car lost during the riots.
For weeks, France was under the spell of riots. Across the country – and particularly around Paris – rioters and protesters took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the alleged racism of the French police. The reason was the death of a 17-year-old boy of Algerian descent, who died after an officer shot him. More than three weeks after the fateful incident, peace has (for the time being) returned to the country, so it is time to assess the damage. What seems? Estimated property damage exceeds €1 billion, more than 5,600 cars were set on fire and many more were severely damaged.
Now that is not such an issue for those who are all-risk insured and do not attach too much to their car; it’s annoying, but the insurance companies will sort it out. For those who only have third-party insurance and who have less purchasing power, the damage caused is disastrous. That is why the French government is making money available for low-income citizens (max. €27,606) who lost their WA-insured car during the riots. They can apply for compensation of up to €4,601 (the amount is based on the value of the lost car) from the ‘Guarantee fund for damage caused by terrorism and other crimes’. Appropriate compensation, as the average third-party insured car in France is reportedly worth less than that amount.
