MV Agusta has joined the TABAC Classic GP Assen as a partner of the event. The partnership marks the return of the Italians to the ‘Cathedral of Speed’, where they have won no fewer than 35 Grand Prix victories. The TABAC Classic GP Assen will take place from 8 to 10 September at the TT Circuit.
In 1945 the ‘Meccanica Verghera Agusta’, manufacturer of helicopters and airplanes, started building its first motorcycles. Under the leadership of Count Domenico Agusta, the company soon entered Grand Prix motorsport. MV Agusta’s first victory at Assen was achieved in 1952 in the 125cc, courtesy of Briton Cecil Sandford.
By the late 1950s, MV Agusta’s dominance in the World Cup was evident. At the Dutch TT of 1958 and 1960, all solo classes were won on MV Agusta. From 1968, MV Agusta’s star driver Giacomo Agostini won all 350cc and 500cc victories at Assen five years in a row.
The 1976 350cc Dutch TT marked the last victory for both MV Agusta and Agostini on Dutch soil, bringing MV Agusta’s total wins on the Drentse Heide to 35.
“We are delighted to announce the partnership between MV Agusta and TABAC Classic GP, and we can’t wait to show our fans what this partnership will deliver. This partnership represents a new chapter in MV Agusta’s celebration of the most iconic and representative locations in the brand’s glorious history.”
“We consider it a great honor to partner with a brand that has brought so much joy and excitement to the fans in Assen for so many years. The collaboration with the MV Agusta factory proves to us that to bring your modern products to the market you have to celebrate your racing history and the TABAC Classic GP is the ideal location for this.”
