The French start-up NamX showed an early version of its hydrogen SUV last year. That car now has a name: NamX HUV. What seems? The NamX HUV uses hydrogen, just like a Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo. The big difference? In the NamX HUV, hydrogen does not go to a fuel cell, but is gurgled by a big V8.

The production-ready NamX HUV, designed by none other than the Italian design house Pininfarina, is a striking newcomer, and not just because of its appearance. The NamX HUV is often called a ‘hydrogen SUV’ by its French creators, but the NamX HUV uses hydrogen very differently from cars like the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai. The NamX HUV has a 6.2 V8 on board that guzzles hydrogen.

In the NamX HUV, hydrogen is used as fuel for a big eight-cylinder. The French have two engine versions in the pipeline. NamX wants to launch a 300 hp rear-wheel drive version and a 550 hp powerful variant with four-wheel drive. The hydrogen required for the 6.2 V8 is stored in several removable cylinders that are located in the rear of the HUV and are clearly visible there.

Both the 300 hp and the 550 hp powerful variant should be able to drive approximately 800 kilometers with full storage tanks. The least powerful version reaches a speed of 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The 550 hp version reaches 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. Extensive technical specifications are not yet available. The first copies should be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2026. The intended starting price of the 300 hp variant, called GT, is €75,000. The 550 hp four-wheel drive GTH variant should cost €95,000.
