Netflix has announced that it will discontinue the cheapest subscription in the United States. What does this mean for Dutch rates?
Netflix is adjusting American subscriptions
Bad news if you use the cheapest Netflix subscription, because the streaming service will stop offering Netflix Basic. The company announced this this week, meaning subscribers will have to switch to another subscription. Netflix will first stop offering Netflix Basic in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In the Netherlands you currently have three options: you can choose from Netflix Basic, Standard and Premium. Netflix Basic is the cheapest subscription, for which you pay 7.99 euros monthly. That price will probably increase soon, but after that the subscription will disappear completely. Instead, Netflix is introducing a completely new subscription. We already know this.
Cheaper subscription to Netflix
Netflix already offers a cheaper subscription in certain countries, but as a subscriber you will see advertising. You only pay $6.99 for that subscription in the United States. This is now one of the most popular subscriptions for the streaming service, so it is expected that Netflix Ads will soon also be available in the Netherlands. This then serves as a replacement for Netflix Basic.
As a Dutch subscriber, you don’t have to worry for the time being, because Netflix Basic will remain available here for a while. It is expected that Netflix will stop offering that subscription once Netflix Ads is launched here. You can then probably choose whether you want to switch to the cheapest subscription with advertising, or go for Netflix Standard.
Rates will soon be more expensive
Netflix is completely adjusting subscriptions in certain countries, but it is still unclear when this will happen in the Netherlands. In any case, there is a good chance that rates will rise here soon, because Netflix will charge higher prices for its subscriptions. For example, you will soon pay 9.99 euros per month for the cheapest Netflix subscription, 12.99 euros for Netflix Standard and even 17.99 euros for Premium.

These price increases have already been implemented in France and Netflix plans to do the same in other countries. This makes Netflix a lot more expensive, especially now that the cheapest subscription with commercials is not yet available. Do you think the streaming service is now becoming too expensive?
