It looks like the next Apple TV will get a higher refresh rate of 120Hz. This is evident from code in the latest tvOS beta.
Apple TV 120Hz: more focus on games
In the code of the latest tvOS 14.5 beta, multiple references are made to 120Hz. So it looks like the next version of Apple’s digital media receiver will get support for a higher refresh rate. At the very least, Apple is testing a 120Hz mode for Apple TV.
A higher refresh rate is not so much relevant for series and movies, which the Apple TV has focused on so far. However, with the growth of Apple Arcade, games are becoming increasingly important for the Apple TV and then the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is clearly noticeable. Also, a refresh rate of 120Hz can make the Apple TV interface run smoother.
The current version of the Apple TV does not support 120Hz. This device can send images with a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz in a 4K resolution to your television. That’s because the current Apple TV has an HDMI 2.0 port. An HDMI 2.1 port is required to send 120Hz and 4K to the television.
