The new BMW 5 series also has a fully electric version for the first time in the form of the i5, but you can also get the 5 series with combustion engines with an electric range. We are of course talking about the plug-in hybrid versions that will come next year, but of which we are already telling you the specifications.

The brand new BMW 5 series is available as an electric i5 in two versions. The BMW i5 is available as a rear-wheel drive i5 eDrive40 with 340 hp and a range of up to 582 kilometers and as a four-wheel drive i5 M60 xDrive with two 601 hp electric motors and a range of up to 516 kilometers. The 5-series with combustion engines will initially come to Europe as 520i and as 520d and 520d xDrive. The first is a petrol version with a 190 hp four-cylinder, while the 520ds have a 197 hp diesel machine with four burners. In the spring of 2024, two plug-in hybrids will be added: the rear-wheel drive 530e and the 550e xDrive with – indeed – four-wheel drive. We already look ahead to what those two plug-in hybrid BMWs 5-series have to offer.

530th

The mildest plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 5 Series is the 530e. Just like the 520i, it has a 190 hp four-cylinder on board, although in this case the petrol engine works together with a 184 hp electric heart. The system power is 299 hp and 450 Nm, which is sent directly to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission. With that power, the 530e stomps from a standstill to a speed of 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds. Its top speed: 230 km/h. However, you have to be satisfied with a more than generous top speed of 140 km / h on only electric power. The 530e squeezes up to 102 kilometers from its 19.4 kWh battery pack. With up to 7.4 kW, the package can be filled with farm-fresh electricity again.

550e xDrive

The most powerful plug-in hybrid BMW 5 Series is called 550e xDrive. It does not have a four-cylinder engine under the hood, but a 3.0 six-in-line that mobilizes 313 hp and 450 Nm. That six-cylinder is supported by an electric motor that is stronger than the one in the 530e. A 197 hp electric motor serves in the 550e xDrive. This brings the system power of the BMW 5 Series 550e xDrive to 489 hp and 700 Nm, enough to allow the car to reach a speed of 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds. Its top speed: 250 km/h. The electric range is a maximum of 90 kilometers below that of the milder motorized 530e.

The outgoing 5-series was also available as a plug-in hybrid in the Netherlands. It was there as 530e, 530e xDrive and 545e xDrive.

Not for Europe

There is more interesting engine news regarding the new BMW 5 Series, although it is about the machines that will not be available in the 5 Series in Europe. For example, the international menu also includes fruits that are prohibited for Europe, such as the 530i xDrive and the mild-hybrid 540i xDrive. These are petrol versions with successively four cylinders and 258 hp and six cylinders and 381 hp.

Which version of the BMW 5 Series or i5 are you most looking forward to? There is also a 5-series Touring in the pipeline and there will also be an electric i5 variant.
