Metamorphosis
The BMW X1 has been completely revised this year and that means it won’t be long before the technically related X2 is helped to a new generation. The new BMW X2 can be seen for the first time in these photos. What seems? BMW is therefore taking a different path.
The BMW X2 has always been a special model within the BMW ranks. Its naming suggests that the model is related to the X1, like the X4 and X6, to the successively X3 and X5. However, that is not quite the case. Where the X4 and X6 are so-called ‘coupé SUVs’ based on their sister models and are clearly recognizable as such, the X2 stands more on its own two feet in terms of design. BMW gave the X2 presented in 2017 a more personal face and its own shape, but it did not get a strongly sloping roofline like the X4 and X7. BMW is returning to that with the new X2.
The current BMW X2 has a more traditional hatchback shape.
These photos show the new BMW X2 for the first time. The X1 front is clearly recognizable from the front. In that respect, the X2 already deviates from its predecessor, but more to the rear, everything is really different. More than with the current X2, the roofline runs from actually the A-pillar to the rear. The roofline continues into a fairly flat rear window. It makes the new X2 more ‘coupé’ and less ‘hatchback’, although such terms can be understandably criticized. We find a striking element on the back of the tailgate, because BMW has placed a spoiler that is very deliberately not fully integrated.
The line of the new BMW X2 is more in line with that of the X4 and X6.
Just like the X1, the new BMW X2 will also have plug-in hybrid powertrains. Will there be an electric iX2? Never say never. Technically it’s possible, but we haven’t seen any evidence of it yet. So just wait.
