New entry-level model for Mercedes-Benz GLS

Mercedes-Benz is expanding the GLS range with a new base engine. Immediately, the grand SUV from Mercedes-Benz is also available as GLS 450 4Matic.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, introduced in the Netherlands in mid-2019, was initially only available as a 400d, but now there are also various petrol versions on the price list. The sporty topper is the mighty GLS 63 AMG with its 612 hp V8, which thanks to EQ-Boost – just like all other petrol versions – temporarily has 22 hp and 250 Nm extra. That AMG stunner has the 557 hp (+22 hp) strong Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 as a luxurious showpiece. The only ‘regular’ GLS with a petrol engine was the GLS 580, a € 159,827 variant with a 489 hp (+22 hp) and 700 Nm (+250 Nm) strong 4.0 V8 in its imposing snout. Mercedes-Benz is now expanding the GLS price list with the 450 4Matic, which was announced last year, a new petrol version with a modest power unit by GLS standards.

Specifications

Modest is of course relative, because the GLS 450 4Matic is not exactly under motorized with its 3.0-V6. The six-cylinder coupled to a 9G-tronic automatic transmission produces 367 hp and 500 Nm, and thanks to the mild-hybrid EQ Boost system, another 22 hp and 250 Nm are temporarily added. With this petrol engine, new for the GLS, the SUV rumbles to a speed of 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds. Its top speed is 246 km / h. This makes the almost 36 mille more expensive GLS 580 with an acceleration time of 5.3 seconds to 100 and a top speed of 250 km / h not even that much faster. The smaller petrol engine also gives the GLS 450 4Matic a lower fuel consumption. Average consumption is set at 10.1 l / 100 km, where the GLS 580 4Matic consumes 11.7 l / 100 km. Bonus points: the smaller power plant also gives the 2,360-kilo GLS 450 4Matic a lower weight than the 2,445-kilo GLS 580. Not that this is an issue in this segment, but there must be a difference.

price

Mercedes-Benz is asking € 123,964 for the new GLS 450 4Matic. This makes it the cheapest GLS you can get. That title first went to the GLS 400d, the diesel version for which Mercedes-Benz charges € 128,597.
