Hide information on WhatsApp
Do you send many photos via WhatsApp? Or do you share other files in the messaging service? In that case your messages end-to-end are encrypted. That means that WhatsApp cannot read or find your messages, so that your privacy is well protected. Yet it is wise to hide sensitive information on images or documents in WhatsApp. Often not all data on a photo or file is required, so in that case you can protect them better.
WhatsApp has been giving the possibility to edit photos and documents for some time. You can add drawings, filters and stickers to files. That is an easy way to hide information in WhatsApp, but often does not look subtle. That is why WhatsApp has now added a new feature, with which you can blur data. Curious how you do that? Data blurring
When sending images you have different ways to edit the photo. You can add (on) drawings or filters, but that’s not all. WhatsApp has recently also given the option to blurr sensitive information. For this, WhatsApp has added a new feature to the menu to edit photos. That way you can quickly hide parts of an image or file. That’s how it works:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ and go to a conversation of your choice;
- Tap the plus sign (+) above the keyboard;
- Select ‘photos’ and choose the image you want to edit;
- Tap on the pole next to ‘Add caption …’;
- Choose the pole in the right corner of the screen again;
- Select the drawing style on the right side of the display;
- Draw a line through the information you want to hide.
With this function, WhatsApp ensures that you can easily hide sensitive information. This is especially useful if, for example, you forward a photo of your driver’s license or passport. It is rare that all data from these documents are required, so that you can better blur irrelevant information. This way you prevent abuse of the photos or documents that you share via WhatsApp.

Of course you can also use the feature to edit business documents in the application. To do that you make a screenshot of the document, then you can blur the information in WhatsApp. It is advisable to hide sensitive information in WhatsApp, in order to prevent fraud. Think of sharing documents when you go on holiday, by blurring certain (irrelevant) data, they cannot be abused.
