Reducing CO2 emissions even further is playing an increasingly important role in the development of a new model, while hordes of high-legged and SUV ballrooms are emerging on the other end of the spectrum. Land Rover is of course just working on a new generation of the Range Rover and it is that colossus that was chased over the Nürburgring-Nordschleife during test work.
The current generation of the Range Rover has been in showrooms since 2012, which means that the SUV with a respectable age of eight years will be replaced soon. Where the English colossus not so long ago had the empire almost alone, Land Rover’s top model in 2020 has a horde of competitors in front of it. From the BMW X7 to the Mercedes-Benz GLS and to some extent cars like the Bentley Bentayga, several renowned brands are now competing against each other for the biggest piece of the SUV pie. It is therefore not surprising that Land Rover is pulling out all the stops to make the fifth generation Range Rover a winner.
The Range Rover, of course, has its heritage but you won’t get there with just an impressive pedigree. Land Rover parks its top SUV on a completely new platform that makes extensive use of aluminum. This Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) base allows more than ever the placement of large battery packs, which means that you can expect quite a bit from the new generation Range Rover in terms of electrification. Currently, the model is already a plug-in hybrid, but count on the arrival of new plug-in versions that have a much longer electric breath. You do not have to count on a fully electric version.
The new Range Rover, which can be seen on a set of fresh spy plates in test costume at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, does not seem to be making a major growth spurt compared to the current model. So count on a car that extends over a distance of about 5 meters. Of course there will be a superlative with an extended wheelbase to satisfy the real luxury horses. The new Range Rover naturally benefits from the latest steps taken by Jaguar Land Rover in infotainment, safety systems and autonomy. Land Rover is part of the UK Autodrive project and so, especially given the Range Rover’s status as a top model, it is not inconceivable that Land Rover will fill the SUV with cameras and sensors.
