The current generation E-class will turn six in January, which means that a completely new model is already being worked hard in Stuttgart. The new E-class is now venturing out in a test suit for the first time.
The E-class has been a strong pillar within the Mercedes range for years. Positioned between the C- and S-classes, the model is Mercedes’ equivalent to cars such as the Audi A6 and BMW 5-series and is therefore of great importance to the brand in the business segment, especially in the home market. Both the C- and S-class were completely renewed not long ago and that means that the now a small six-year-old E-class will follow relatively soon.

It will come as no surprise that the new E-class will again closely resemble the S-class in terms of design. Or on the C-class, if you will. The three models have shown strong similarities for years and that is of course not going to change. The external difference with the current generation E-class will not be a huge step. During the facelift that Mercedes-Benz carried out on the E-class at the beginning of last year, the E-class Limousine was fitted with a completely new rear, which already contains design elements from the current Benzen series.

The new E-class will not only be available as a Limousine, but also as an Estate, but whether the Cabriolet and Coupé will also return remains to be seen. It is not inconceivable that those two body styles merge with the Coupé and Cabrio of the C-class. After all, those flavors do not yet exist for the current generation C-class. Just like under the C and S class, we will soon find a variant of the MRA II platform under the new E-class, a basis that, among other things, brings a co-steering and counter-steering rear axle to the model. Of course, the door to electrification is wide open. Count on petrol and diesel plug-ins and mild hybrid machines again, but you do not have to count on a fully electric version. After all, Mercedes-Benz has devised the EQE for this. Of course, lovers of very fast comfortable transport are again served with AMG versions, in any case count on AMG models that are assisted by electric power.
We do not expect the new E-class to be on the market before 2023. Once ready for car land, the E-class will immediately have a hard time. BMW has a completely new generation 5-series in the development rooms.
