A rumor previously appeared that all models in the iPhone 17 series will receive ProMotion screens. This is now confirmed.
Entire iPhone 17 series gets ProMotion
Display analyst Ross Young said in September that the entire iPhone 17 series will have ProMotion screens. ProMotion is a feature currently exclusive to the Pro models. This rumor is now supported by a new report. That report is a little less specific and only refers to a high refresh rate. Still, it implies that non-Pro models will get ProMotion screens for the first time.

ProMotion screens
The refresh rate of a display measures the number of times per second the screen is refreshed. It is expressed in Hz. Until now, non-Pro models have always had a 60 Hz screen. This means that the screen refreshes 60 times per second.
Many displays have a higher refresh rate, but there are also more advanced displays with variable refresh rates. They can therefore increase or decrease the refresh rate in a targeted manner. This is made possible by an OLED technology called LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide).
Apple uses the name ProMotion for displays with a variable refresh rate. Those frequencies can vary from 120 Hz to 1 Hz. This offers three advantages:
- 120 Hz doubles the frame rate of games, among other things, and thus ensures a better response speed.
- Temporarily lower refresh rates conserve battery life.
- 1 Hz makes the always-on function possible, because this speed consumes almost no power.

All iPhone 17 models
Ross Young already reported that LTPO displays will come to all iPhone 17 models next year. This means that both the base model and the iPhone 17 Air will get the new feature. The rumor is now confirmed by Weibo user Digital Chat Station. This user has previously leaked correct rumors, such as the telephoto lens that would come to the iPhone 16 Pro and the larger sensor in the main camera.
It would certainly be a timely update. Screens with a variable refresh rate are already common on Android devices, which are also cheaper.
