In 2022 we can expect a completely new electric Smart in the showrooms. Not only will that car be new to the smallest bolt, the Smart brand is completely different from how we know it.
In March last year, it was announced that Daimler and the Chinese company Geely would start a partnership that would take care of Smart. Today it is known that the new half-German and half-Chinese joint venture in Europe will simply be known as Smart Europe GmbH. Dirk Adelmann, previously spread over various branches already high in the tree at Mercedes-Benz, has been appointed as CEO of the European Smart branch. Together with Geely, Daimler will focus exclusively on the development of compact electric models with the new Smart. In addition, the manufacturer indicates that in 2022 the first fully electric B-segmenter of the new smart will be in the order books.
The new Smarts are to be launched in a new production facility in China. Mercedes-Benz is responsible for the design of the new models. Chinese partner Geely is responsible for the technical development of the electric newcomers. Since 2019, Smart has only offered the electric versions of the ForTwo and ForFour in the Netherlands since 2019.
