No traffic jams in the morning on the first working day in lockdown

Rijkswaterstaat and ANWB Traffic Information had no traffic reports on Monday at 8.30 am. That time is normally the busiest time of the morning rush hour. Logically, the new lockdown is the cause.

Although it seems logical that the lockdown is the main cause of the quiet on the road, the ANWB does not want to draw that conclusion so black and white: “Whether the lack of traffic jams is a direct result of the lockdown that started on Sunday, we cannot say for sure, but it is of course very coincidental that there are no traffic jams on Monday morning,” said ANWB Traffic Information. Last Monday there was about 90 kilometers of traffic jam around 8.30 am. In the period before the corona crisis, 300 to 400 kilometers of traffic jams for a random winter Monday morning were not uncommon. In the past week, the ANWB noted an average traffic jam length of about 150 to 155 kilometres.

Rijkswaterstaat also confirms that it was very quiet on the road on Monday morning during rush hour. For the time being, the service does not venture to compare with other Mondays. To do this, it wants to look at the traffic picture for a longer period of time. On November 15, the first Monday after the tightened home work advice, it was also very quiet on the Dutch roads. Around 8.00 there was a 92 kilometer traffic jam.
