Last week, MWC 2022 (Mobile World Congress) took place and several new flagships were unveiled there. It is noteworthy that HMD Global, the company that is allowed to release phones under the Nokia name, has not announced premium phones for a while.
Competition
It’s been a while since HMD introduced a new premium Nokia smartphone to the world. The Finnish electronics manufacturer has explained to Android Authority why this is.
Right now it makes no sense for us to make an 800 dollar phone. We are not interested in competing on specifications, which, by the way, hardly make any profit. We want to distinguish ourselves in other ways.
patent lawsuit
Most Nokia phones have been taken off the shelves in Switzerland and Germany. This is because HMD Global recently lost a patent lawsuit with company VoiceAgeEVS (VAEVS). Because of this lawsuit, HMD is not allowed to sell Nokia X, G and C series devices in both countries and probably not in the entire European market.
The Finnish manufacturer says that they currently want to focus on feature phones, midrange and budget devices. According to HMD, these smartphones would be equipped with hardware that should last several years. The devices would also have a battery life of several days.
HMD is using this strategy to strengthen their position in the US prepaid phone market. “Once there is a strong foundation going forward, we can expand at a later point in a way that benefits the core business,” said Ferguson.
From this information that we get from HMD, we can conclude that we should probably not expect high-end Nokia smartphones in the near future.
