The first Dutch speed camera that IPHones behind it recognizes has started handing out fines. Along this road is the speed camera!
Speed camera recognizes iPhones
Are you on the road a lot by car? In that case you have to pay attention from now on, because the Netherlands has a new type of speed camera. It is a focus flash, who checks whether drivers of a car use a mobile phone while driving. The first Dutch speed camera that iPhones recognizes was already placed in February, but did not issue any fines yet. That is now changing.
The Dutch government has tested the first focus flash from February to April. The images of the speed camera were investigated to check whether iPhones (and other smartphones) were clearly recorded. In the meantime, the quality of the images has been approved, so that the new speed camera has been put into use. Does the focus flash recognize a smartphone behind the wheel? Then a fine of 430 euros.

Here is the focus flash
The new speed camera has been technically extensively tested on the N230 in Utrecht in recent months. That is not the location where the first focus flash has been in use since Monday 19 May 2025, which is in The Hague. Along the Ypensburg Stationsweg in The Hague Is now the first speed camer, which records iPhones and other mobile phones behind the wheel. In the coming months, more focus flashes will follow at different locations throughout the country.
The images of the focus flash do not immediately deliver a fine. They are first checked by an extraordinary investigating officer. This check confirms whether the speed camera has indeed registered an iPhone or other mobile device behind the steering wheel. Is that the case? Then not much later you will receive a fine of 430 euros at home. That is one of the highest traffic fines that the Netherlands has.

Safe option: CarPlay
According to the government, registering iPhones and other smartphones with the new speed camera is needed to improve safety on the road. Previous research showed that no less than 75 percent of road users sometimes have a smartphone behind the wheel. The new speed camera must reduce that percentage. In the coming period, focus flashes will mainly be placed on N-roads and busy roads within built-up areas.
Do you use your iPhone to navigate in the car or to listen to music? In that case, CarPlay is a safe way to use your iPhone behind the wheel.
