Plus 15 percent since 2020

The popularity of private lease contracts for cars is increasing. In recent years the number has increased by about 15 percent.
The number of lease contracts increased from 214,000 in 2020 to 245,000 in 2023. That is an increase of approximately 15 percent, reports Van Bruggen Adviesgroep. Young people in particular, who often cannot afford an expensive purchase such as a car, are interested in a lease contract.
The financial advisor warns that more attention should be paid to the impact that entering into a private lease contract has on obtaining a maximum mortgage. According to the group’s financial advisors, the future generation of home buyers, who also have to deal with significant student debt, do not understand the consequences of this type of debt.
Such a lease contract involves a significant BKR registration, for which Generation Z seems insufficiently prepared, warns director Jan Thale Haandrikman of the advisory group. For example, a lease amount of €25,000 often reduces the maximum mortgage by €88,000, according to Haandrikman.
