Bad news for the notorious speeders. After a successful trial, the Public Prosecution Service has decided to deploy fifty movable speed cameras. The test with this mobile speed camera showed that there were far fewer speeding violations.
After the regular speed camera, the section control and the laser gun, the Public Prosecution Service will launch a new weapon in the fight against speeders with the purchase of 50 mobile speed cameras.
According to a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service, the mobile speed cameras are used throughout the country, in places where speeding is a major risk. Provincial roads, but also within built-up areas or in places where many accidents occur.
The intention is that the new speed cameras will remain in one location for a number of weeks to months. The Public Prosecution Service hopes in this way to bring about a change in behaviour. According to the Ministry of Justice, the mobile speed cameras can contribute to the goal of zero road deaths by 2030.
The mobile speed camera fills the gap between the mobile radar that only monitors one place for a few hours and the fixed speed camera that is permanently in one fixed location. There are currently more than 600 of these fixed speed cameras in the Netherlands and that number is still growing.
The Public Prosecution Service expects that another twelve movable speed cameras will be delivered by the Swedish company Gatso this year, the other poles will come next year.
