On holiday? This is how you connect a Chromecast to a TV in your hotel room or holiday home

If you are going on a trip, you can easily take your films and series with you by simply connecting a Chromecast to the TV in your hotel room or holiday home. Your phone can then stream all that content on the big screen. We explain how that works.

Chromecast on vacation

Whether you go on holiday to make nice trips, go for a walk in nature or lie on the beach all day: sometimes it can be relaxing to watch a movie in the evening in the holiday home. It is useful to take a Chomecast with you and let your phone do the work by streaming.

That’s not the full story though. You should of course make sure in advance that you choose a hotel or holiday home with a WiFi router. Also check the reviews of other guests beforehand to see what they write about the quality of the WiFi connection. At worst, it is so bad that streaming becomes difficult.

Two possible situations

If your hotel has a solid connection, you can still be faced with two different situations. In the first case you just get the network name and password, but in the second situation you get limited access and you first have to go through an insertion procedure. In that case you often have to state your name and room number along with other details, after which you will be given access.

Some booking sites specifically show you the WiFi connection ratings

In either case, we’ll help you with the steps below. Note that you will need to reset the Chromecast if you have previously used the device for television at home. Connect it to power and hold the power button. The light will flash and will not release until it comes on.

I have received a network name and password

This is the easiest way to connect a Chromecast. All you have to do is set it up like you would at home. Go to the Google Home apppress the at the top plus button and then Set up device. Then you need to choose the correct WiFi network to connect your Chromecast directly. Finally, you give the Chromecast a name and you can then stream from your phone.

I have a WiFi network with login screen

This method is much less Chromecast-friendly. As soon as you connect to the correct network, you will be redirected on your smartphone to a separate web page with a login screen. There you can enter all the necessary data to connect your phone, but it is not yet possible to connect your streaming stick. Your Chromecast cannot fill out such a registration form by itself.

Fortunately, there is a solution where you use one of your devices as a hotspot. This works best with a Windows laptop, because with it you can share your WiFi network – and therefore the hotel connection. Another way is to use your phone as a hotspot, but you only use mobile data.

I use a Windows laptop

Note that this only works with Windows and not macOS. Here are the steps:

  1. go to it Start menu and choose Settings
  2. Choose Network and Internet
  3. click on Mobile hotspot
  4. Set the function On
  5. You can find the network name and password at the bottom
  6. Set up your Chromecast by connecting it to your hotspot via the Google Home app (Plus button -> Set device)

I only have my android phone

This method is really only desirable for those who have an unlimited subscription. In this case, you are not using your hotel’s Wi-Fi network, but your phone’s mobile data. By streaming you could exceed your data limit, causing your provider to charge extra costs. If you have unlimited, you can set it like this:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Search for Hotspot and tap the option
  3. Enter a name for your network and choose a strong password
  4. Put with the switch your hotspot on
  5. Set up your Chromecast by connecting it to your hotspot via the Google Home app (Plus button -> Set device)
