The OnePlus 10 Pro has a build quality issue. During a bending test by Youtuber JerryRigEverything, the device broke in two without much effort. It seems that the metal frame is too thin and fragile to provide adequate protection.
OnePlus 10 Pro broken in two
When we look at phones we are usually primarily concerned with specifications, the quality of software, creativity in design and camera performance. Yet there is one aspect that is sometimes forgotten and which we at Androidworld can only test to a limited extent in our review samples: the durability of a device.
The well-known Youtuber JerryRigEverything recently started working with the OnePlus 10 Pro and had a device shipped from China for a durability test. The phone has not yet been announced outside the home country of OnePlus. When Zack Nelson, as the man’s real name is, gets to the bend test section, the phone turns out to be unable to withstand it. The OnePlus 10 Pro breaks in two after some crackling noises when Nelson tries to bend the phone in both hands and with his thumbs. You can see it in the video.
A bend test is invariably part of Nelson’s durability tests, but in recent years it’s rare for the phones to bend at all, let alone break in two. Nelson usually does not get further than a crackling sound, without further consequences for the operation of the smartphone.
Weak frame
Because the phone broke in two, the Youtuber immediately set out to find the cause of the poor structural integrity. He found that the metal frame of the device is too thin to properly protect the phone against this type of impact. The OnePlus 10 Pro this time got a larger 5,000 mAh battery that seems to take up too large a place. In addition, Nelson notes that the phone is effectively broken in the place in front of the volume button, which makes the frame thinner locally and thus weakens it even more.
Nelson concludes that his findings will have little impact on users who carry the phone in their front pocket, but when the OnePlus 10 Pro is in the back pocket, it can be damaged. On the other hand, an accident with this phone happened faster than with other devices.
Will there be changes?
In addition to this obvious problem with the sturdiness of the phone, the OnePlus 10 Pro has passed the durability test well. The scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus is good, the phone has a pre-installed screen protector and the fingerprint scanner continues to work flawlessly after being scratched.
We asked OnePlus Netherlands for a statement and also asked whether the brand is still making changes to the design of the 10 ¨¨Pro before it is announced in international markets. That will likely happen in the coming weeks.
