Not for decoration
It certainly doesn’t have to look beautiful to stand out in the Dutch street scene. This Opel Rekord from 1981 proves that again. Not a beautiful specimen, but a wonderfully typical appearance.
It took a while for the Opel Rekord to become a mocking appearance, but now it is certainly a car that you can take the time to capture. Even if it is one that is not immediately the most flourishing. That is the case with this Rekord spotted by AutoWeek forum member Karmann Ghia. All around we see traces of an eventful life. The hanging front bumper, the bent front number plate, the twisted rear bumper and the scrape at the rear left; it is clear that this Rekord could use some love.
But hey, don’t let that spoil the fun! With its nice dark red paint, modest steel wheels and the lack of a side mirror, this pre-facelift Rekord E is a beautiful embodiment of the time from which it dates. According to the spotter, it also has a red interior. The overall picture reminds us of this Rekord that appeared in Enthusiast Wanted more than a year ago and a closer look shows that it is almost certainly that car. Then it looks a little less good than it seemed to be the case at the time, or it is a bit heavier with its current owner than before.
The Rekord has now been with its new owner for less than a year, which reinforces the suspicion that it is indeed the same Rekord as before. We hope there are plans to freshen up the car again, it certainly deserves that. Whether he can also stay for 21 years, just like with the first owner? Let’s make sure there are still 21 years of life left in it.
