Opel: ‘Successor Insignia will be EV’

The Opel Insignia will eventually receive a successor. It is not yet entirely clear what kind of car that will be, but Opel has already revealed one thing: the new Insignia will be fully electric.

The fact that the successor to the Insignia will be fully electric is in line with Opel’s previously announced electrification plan: all models in the Opel range will have an electric variant from 2024 and Opel will only supply EVs in Europe from 2028. It is not yet clear when the electric Insignia will be on the market and what form it will take. However, expect that the Insignia will look different than you are used to. Michael Lohscheller, the previous Opel boss, indicated last year that he expected his design teams to come up with something new for the next generation of the Insignia.

Lohscheller is now no longer with Opel, but given the waning popularity of the traditional D-segment, it is not inconceivable that the new Insignia will stand higher on its legs. With this, Opel may follow Citroën’s approach with the C5 X, although the latter is not available as a fully electric variant. Ford also has similar plans with the Mondeo. It seems likely that the next generation Insignia will be on the new STLA Medium platform from parent company Stellantis. Given that many new models using one of the STLA platforms are planned for 2024, an introduction of the new Insignia in that year is also an obvious choice.

Will this soon be a thing of the past?

The Opel Insignia appeared on the Dutch market at the end of 2008. In total, Opel sold 30,049 copies of the mid-sized car in our country. The model ran particularly well in the early years, in 2013 the number of units sold halved to 1,936. In 2017 the second generation came on the market, but it really only went further downhill with the Insignia. The facelift at the end of 2019 was to no avail. Last year, Opel only registered 229 copies.

Opel will introduce many more new fully electric models on the market in the coming years. For example, the Astra Sports Tourer will have an electric version, the successor to the Crossland will be fully electric and the brand will breathe new life into the Manta name with an electric crossover.
