With the arrival of tvOS 9.2 for the Apple TV, it is possible to collect apps in folders. In this article we explain how it works.
Apple TV folders
The fourth generation Apple TV was released last year and it is the first Apple TV to have its own App Store. In an iOS-like environment on TV (tvOS) you can create your own main page of apps that you use. This makes the Apple TV 4 a much more complete device than previous generations, which had to do without apps.
Various types of apps can be downloaded from the Apple TV’s App Store. There are of course many video-related apps, such as YouTube, Plex and Netflix, but you can also find games there. It is only the tip of the iceberg, because you can also find apps in areas such as education and health.
And as soon as you get the option to download apps, you run into the same problems as on your iPhone or iPad: it becomes full on your homescreen. With iOS you can solve this by making folders for better organization and that is also possible on the Apple TV.
That is how it works
Users can only use folders since tvOS 9.2 is available. The folders can show 9 apps on a screen, so you have the home screen clear again in no time. Below we explain how it works in X steps.
- Select an app on the Apple TV that you want to place in a folder;
- Press and hold the select button on the remote control until the icon starts to wobble;
- Swipe the trackpad of the remote control to overlay the app on a second app (do that otherwise the icons will fade);
- If you place it correctly over the other app, a folder will automatically appear where both apps will be placed.
Renaming
If the apps are in the folder, Apple TV will name it automatically, based on the type of apps. You can also change the name. You do this by opening the folder and swiping up on the trackpad. A cursor will now appear in the title and a keyboard. Remove the word that is there before adding a new title.
It is also possible to remove apps from folders. To do this, select them until they wiggle and drag them outside the map.
