Parallels Desktop 16: Windows and macOS in one

macOS is the ideal operating system for your MacBook, yet there are times when you actually need Windows. Parallels Desktop offers the solution. With the program, you can easily switch between macOS and Windows and take advantage of the useful features of both operating systems.

For example, you can play PC games that are only suitable for Windows, or run programs that do not support macOS. All your files that you have on your Mac can also be found in the Windows desktop.

Because you run both operating systems at the same time, you can easily transfer files from your Mac to the Windows desktop. Earlier we wrote about Parallels Desktop 15, the predecessor of the Mac app. This one came out a little less than a year ago. This already had support for Sidecar and the Apple Pencil. In this article, we’ll discuss the key new features in Parallels Desktop 16.

Optimized for macOS Big Sur

The latest version of Parallels Desktop 16 is optimized for the latest Windows 10 updates and currently works well on macOS Catalina. Moreover, Parallels Desktop is already fully prepared for the macOS update that is imminent: macOS Big Sur (11).

The updated design is similar to the ‘Big Sur look’. Upcoming features from the latest macOS update will also be integrated. For example, there is now support for applications with 3D capabilities. The program also starts up twice as fast.

Improved battery life

Your MacBook’s battery now lasts longer while using Parallels Desktop. The battery life is increased by about ten percent when you run Windows in travel mode.

Even when you don’t use or minimize your Windows desktop, it automatically goes on pause. This is also done to save power. To pick up where you left off, all you have to do is click on the screen. What is striking is that the program responds quite quickly.

System runs faster and can automatically reclaim disk space

The great thing about Parallels Desktop 16 is that it works quickly and runs graphically demanding programs, such as Photoshop, fluently. This is because Parallels Desktop now runs on a faster api, which is DirectX 11.

You can play a variety of PC games in Parallels Desktop, but that of course depends on your Mac’s hardware. If your graphics card and CPU are powerful enough, games should run smoothly.

In addition, the app has a new feature where unused disk space is automatically returned when you close it. That way, your Mac continues to run fast and you can also easily start and close Parallels Desktop.

Multi-Touch Gestures in Windows Apps

Another nifty new feature is the ability to use Multi-Touch gestures on your trackpad in Windows apps. For example, swipe two fingers apart to zoom in, or rotate images with two fingers. Scrolling also works flawlessly with your Mac’s trackpad.

Parallels Desktop 16 is free to test for 14 days. You do need to create an account for this. Are you satisfied and do you already have an old version of Parallels? Then you can upgrade for 50 euros. If you are new, you can purchase a new license from 80 euros.

Claim one of five free codes

In collaboration with Parallels, iPhoned five download codes away for the latest Pro version of the app. This gives you access to updates and allows you to control your Mac remotely from an iOS or Android device, or via a browser. All codes are now forgiven. Thanks everyone for participating!

These give you a one-year license worth 99.99 euros with which you can use the app unlimitedly. You can redeem the code via the Parallels website.
