Drive into a parking space in busy city traffic. That’s no mean feat; you soon lose a pair of eyes. Fortunately, many cars have a parking aid.
“A parking aid is handy in the city,” says Mark Maaskant of the Road Safety Lab. “Then you as a driver can keep a close eye on other traffic. But keep your foot on the brake, because as a driver you must of course be able to intervene.” Activating is easy. With the push of a button on your dashboard you activate the parking aid and when you drive past a parking space that is large enough, you receive a notification. And then just follow the on-screen instructions. Important: stop when he tells you to, otherwise you will still crash. You will see that it parks perfectly along the curb, without damaging your wheels.
Autonomous
According to Henk van Hoef of Bosch Car Service, there are two types of parking aids. The first is a passive system, i.e. the beep that beeps in quicker succession as you get closer to an obstacle. And then there is the active system that Mark Maaskant talks about: it really helps you with parking. “Your car contains sensors and 360-degree cameras, which, together with intelligent software, can help you. Depending on the car type, such a system can then autonomously steer, accelerate, brake and shift gears.” And when we discussed other ADAS components, we mentioned that keeping your car clean is so important. But did you know that there are cars with a reversing camera that can clean that camera themselves? With a little windshield washer fluid and air blown over it. Nice is not it!
What is ADAS?
It is the abbreviation for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and that is the umbrella that many systems fall under. These are smart facilities that ensure that your car can, for example, park itself, keep your distance or suddenly recognize danger. |
